Editorial standards
The Florida Progressive has a point of view, and we say so openly. These standards explain how we keep that perspective honest. Draft. Review before launch.
Mission and perspective
We cover Florida from a progressive perspective: we care about working families, civil rights, democratic participation, and the environment. That perspective shapes which stories we choose. It never permits inventing, distorting, or omitting facts.
News vs. opinion
Stories in our Opinion section are clearly labeled and reflect the author's views. News and analysis in News, Politics, Environment, and Communities are reported pieces that attribute claims to sources and link to primary documents whenever possible.
Sourcing and fact-checking
- We source facts to primary records: statutes and bill text, court filings, agency data and guidance, budgets, and transcripts. Every story lists its sources at the end.
- We may use other news organizations' reporting as a lead, but we confirm facts against the original record before publishing. We cite another outlet only when the story is about that outlet.
- We identify sources by name whenever possible and explain why when we don't.
- We seek comment from people and institutions we report on.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so. Corrections are noted at the bottom of the story with the date of the change, and the story's "Updated" date reflects it. To report an error, contact us (contact details coming soon).
Ethics and independence
Our writers disclose conflicts of interest. We do not accept payment for coverage, and advertisers and donors have no say in editorial decisions.
Use of AI tools
Any use of AI tools in reporting or production is reviewed by a human editor, and no story is published without human verification of its facts.
Feedback
We want to hear from readers. Tips, corrections, and op-ed pitches are always welcome. Learn more about us or meet our writers.
